Ways to Make Wheelchairs More Comfortable

If your loved one needs a wheelchair to navigate the world, they’re probably going to be spending a lot of time sitting in it. That means that it needs to be durable, safe, and very comfortable. Today we’re going to be taking a look at a few ways that you can make your loved one’s wheelchair more comfortable.

Wheelchair Cushions are Great

Wheelchair cushions offer many different ways to stay comfortable as your loved one sits in their wheelchair. Though the wheelchair itself will come with a cushion, it may not be the right fit to maximize long-term comfort. Not only that, but the original cushion will eventually wear out from long-term use. Your loved one may need a new wheelchair cushion if you notice the following:

  • Sliding out of the chair.
  • Not wanting to use the chair.
  • Wanting to get out of the wheelchair after a short time.
  • Pressure sores and/or skin lesions.

If you or your loved one discover or experience any of these issues, we can help to make the wheelchair much more comfortable. Even if the wheelchair came with a brand new cushion, finding the right one for your loved one’s specific needs is going to make a big difference in comfort.

Make Sure the Wheelchair is Adjusted Properly

If the footrest on the wheelchair isn’t adjusted to the right height, then your loved one may experience undue discomfort. You want the footrest to be adjusted so that their knees are elevated slightly above their hips. Even a few inches of difference can cause soreness or aching in various parts of your loved one’s body.

Support is Important

Ensure that your loved one has the right support system within their wheelchair. This can include lumbar supports, soft armrests, and lateral side supports. The lateral side supports in particular can be essential for patients who struggle with balance or torso control.
