Your Home’s Layout
Most homes are not built with wheelchair optimization in mind, meaning they can be quite difficult to traverse. Doorways may need to be widened in order to make access easier for wheelchairs or walkers. Typically a width of 32” is suitable for most wheelchairs.
Another concern may be the ability to turn around. If a room is too small or too cramped, it could be difficult to turn your wheelchair around. Most don’t turn on a dime, the standard space required is 60×60”.
Troubles With Stairs
Stairs are a big no-go when it comes to wheelchairs. Trying to go up a flight of stairs with a wheelchair is akin to pushing a boulder up a hill, it’s not gonna happen. Handrails can help, but are far from an end all be all solution.

Trouble’s Brewing in the Kitchen
Kitchens can be particularly troublesome for those in a wheelchair. Countertops and ovens/burners should all be placed at a reachable height. If you can’t reach your countertop, how are you going to use it? Also keep in mind that under the counter cupboards can restrict a wheelchair user’s ability to get close enough to their countertop.
Wall ovens are typically easier to use than their standard floor unit counterparts, and you should make sure that your sinks are shallow enough that you can use them while in your chair. These are all just some common problems we’ve helped people with over the years. Basically you just want to make sure your kitchen is readily available and easy to use.
