Coping Strategies for New Wheelchair Users

If you recently started using a wheelchair to address your mobility issues, then you may be going through an emotional process. Using a wheelchair can bring with it some uncomfortable physical and emotional feelings. Some people may feel their disability has somehow passed judgment on them as a person and that it defines their self-worth. Today we’re going to talk about some of the issues that new wheelchair users may face and coping strategies to work through it.

Seek Support When You Need It

When you feel down, what do you do? Many different people have many different answers to this question. Some people do activities that they enjoy or spend time with friends. However, if you have recently become disabled or you’re struggling with your mobility, then you may not be able to do all of the things that you once could. This can bring up a lot of negative feelings and you may feel like hiding them deep within yourself. Maybe you feel like your friends or family don’t want to hear about all that. The most important time to reach out for support is when you need it. If you’re having a hard time coping with using a wheelchair, then speak up, and be honest with the ones you love. After all, they love you and though you may not be in the best place, you’re still you and they love you. Reach out for support when you need it and lend support when you can. It is through our relationships that we as human beings remain strong and how we face all of life’s challenges.

Make Sure Your Wheelchair is Comfortable

You may not be used to sitting as much as you are now. Take some time to make sure that your wheelchair is comfortable. This process begins when you purchase the right model for you. After you find the right model, you might need additional supports or cushions depending on your specific body and disabilities. We at Freedom Mobility are more than happy to help with this aspect of your process; it’s what we do.

Take Advantage of the Technology That’s Out There

There are so many new and amazing technologies coming out all of the time for people who are facing all manner of disabilities. These technologies can help you to overcome a wide variety of concerns and challenges; all you have to do is search them out. If you’re not sure how to, ask a friend or care provider to help you. Together, with the strength of community, all things are possible.
