Chair Yoga

Recently, we read an article from the New York Post that really moved us. An 85 year old woman from New York who suffered from a hunchback posture and terrible debilitating back pain was able to find not only relief but correction to her condition with the help of her caregiver and friend who is also a certified yoga instructor. Through hard work and the help of her doctor and therapist, she is now free of pain and can walk up stairs that she normally had to be carried up. We work with customers who suffer from similar ailments and who have various needs and disabilities. These sometimes leave them confined to a chair most of the day. That is why we have assembled a few yoga poses that can be done from a chair that can help with posture, flexibility, blood flow, and mood.

Raised Hands Pose

While breathing in, raise your arms and point upwards towards the ceiling while sitting up straight.

Cat Stretch

With both feet flat on the floor, put your hands on your knees and, while breathing in, arch the back towards the ceiling. When exhaling, round your spine and let your head fall forward. Repeat three to five times.

Neck Roll

With your eyes closed, put your chin to your chest. Slowly circle your neck clockwise then counter clockwise. Relax your body and shoulders while circling and move slowly and fluidly. These few yoga exercises that can be performed in a wheelchair are good alternatives for seniors or disabled people who may not be mobile enough to stand for long periods of time. You should always ask your doctor before beginning any exercise regimen. For more information on wheelchairs, lift chairs and mobility equipment, contact us today.
