Do you need a hospital bed in your home? If you or a loved one have recently undergone a surgery or other life change that would require them to use a hospital bed, looking into a rental may be a good idea. It makes more sense to purchase a bed outright if you think your need will be long-term, but how do you know when it makes more sense to rent? And how much should you expect to pay? Let’s look at some of the details of renting or owning a hospital bed during recovery so that you can better prepare. How Much Would it Be to Rent a Hospital Bed?

When Should You Consider Renting a Hospital Bed?

In most cases renting a hospital bed is preferable to owning one. Hospital beds are costly and once you’ve recovered you likely won’t need one anymore. If you expect your recovery to be quick, there is no real reason to purchase a bed. Not to mention the fact that renting will be more cost effective for a short-term solution.

When Should You Purchase a Hospital Bed Outright?

If, on the other hand, you have a long term disability that requires a hospital bed for safety and comfort, you may want to consider purchasing the bed outright. Basically, if you think you’re going to need the bed for longer than 6-8 months, you might want to buy it.

What Can You Expect to Pay Whether Your Rent or Own?

If you plan to rent a hospital bed while you recover from an illness or surgery, it’s very likely your insurance will cover some, if not all, of the expense of the bed rental. You will have to check with your insurance company to see what is covered and what isn’t, but you’d be wise to start there as it could potentially save you a significant amount of money in the long run. If your insurance will not cover the cost of the bed, or will only partially cover it, beds usually range between $200-$500 a month to rent, depending on how many features they have. If you feel purchasing a bed would be a better option, beds can be purchased outright, and come in a wide range of price points. Hospital beds can range from $600 to several thousand dollars based on the features the bed offers (manual adjustment vs. electric, etc). Purchased beds may also be eligible for insurance assistance, depending on your particular policy and medical needs.
