When you are using a wheelchair, sometimes the idea of an outing can be overwhelming. Planning a fun day trip with your family can present certain challenges when you aren’t familiar with an area. We’ve compiled a short list of activities in or around Hanover, Maryland that can be added to your bucket list without the need to stress over accessibility. wheelchair comfortability

Arundel Mills Mall

Right in the heart of Hanover, MD is Arundel Mills Mall, which has become a destination in and of itself. The mall features a wide variety of stores to keep you busy for hours, all on one level. In addition to the shopping, Arundel Mills Mall also has a large luxury movie theater with an Egyptian theme, as well as a Dave and Busters arcade, and several chain restaurants. Included in the mall is also a Medieval Times Dinner & Tournament which is handicap accessible and entertaining for the whole family! Arundel Mills’ most recent addition is Maryland LIVE Casino, if case gambling is your forte. The Casino and its attached restaurants are also accessible.

Baltimore’s Inner Harbor

About twenty minutes outside of Hanover, you’ll find Baltimore’s Inner Harbor. A great location for a day trip, the Inner Harbor has a wide variety of sights and activities. The majority of attractions in Baltimore are considered accessible, but let’s take a look at some of our favorites:

  • The National Aquarium in Baltimore is handicap accessible and is a great day trip for families. The Aquarium can get a bit crowded however, so we recommend avoiding peak weekends, simply for comfort’s sake. If possible, try to visit the aquarium early in the morning or on a weekday.
  • Like the aquarium, the Maryland Science Center also makes a great daytime activity. The Science Center is handicap accessible with access to elevators and access ramps.
  • And finally, our third pick for an activity in Baltimore’s Inner Harbor is Oriole Park at Camden Yards. Spend the day at the aquarium or Science Center and end your day taking in a good old fashioned baseball game. Camden Yards is completely handicap accessible with handicap seats in nearly every section, and a “Fan Assistance Center” should you need help locating these seats or elevators.

Special Considerations

While these activities are fun and exciting, the amount of distance you’ll cover is no joke! Whether you are spending the day wandering around Arundel Mills Mall, or you are exploring the Inner Harbor in Baltimore, you may want to consider renting a motorized scooter or wheelchair if you don’t already have one. So whether you want to catch a movie, gaze in wonder at a coral reef, or enjoy a hot dog during a ball game, there is no need to let your disability limit you! At Freedom Mobility, we want to help you live your life to the fullest, without stress or worry. If you are planning a short or long trip to Hanover, MD and its surrounding areas and are in need of a rental wheelchair or a motorized wheelchair, contact us today!
