What Kind of Wheelchair is Right for Me?

The Freedom Mobility

I can't thank Kelly and her staff enough for how helpful and caring they have been during my mother's recovery. It is obvious that they have the client's best interests in mind. I highly recommend this company!

types of wheelchairs mobility

Wheelchairs come in a variety of styles and designs that range from simple to complex and made to suit the needs of those with different mobility concerns. But how do you know which kind of wheelchair is right for you? Let’s take a look at some of your options to find out which wheelchair style is best for your personal mobility needs.

Manual Wheelchairs: Simple & Portable

Manual wheelchairs are operated by the user manually moving the wheels with their hands as they travel. The user can easily maneuver the chair forward, backward, and pivot to the sides. This type of wheelchair is lightweight, easily portable, and traditionally more cost-effective than more advanced chairs. However, the downside to a manual wheelchair is that it requires the user to exert a fair amount of energy to move it, so it might not be the best option for those who frequently travel long distances.

Powered Wheelchairs: Efficient & Easy-to-Use

Powered wheelchairs use electricity from a battery to move the chair. The user has controls usually on either side of the armrest that they use to move the chair forward or backward. Since these chairs require menial effort from the user, this is a great mobility option for older people or for people who travel long distances regularly. The downside to this chair is that it is often bulkier and heavier than a manual wheelchair, making it a little harder to store and travel with.

All-Terrain Wheelchairs: Capable & Reliable

All-terrain wheelchairs are wheelchairs that are designed to work well and require minimal effort when traveling over uneven or steep terrain. These wheelchairs typically have larger wheels and more advanced design to ensure that they can handle any terrain presented. They also have tremendous power that enables the user to navigate steep terrain safely. This is a good wheelchair option for users who travel a lot or usually encounter bumpy terrain.

Positioning Wheelchairs: Comfortable & Versatile

Positioning wheelchairs give the user the option of various seating positions. For example, some of these types of wheelchairs allow for reclining of the seat and others allow users to raise their feet. There are positioning wheelchairs that allow for a combination of different positions, and there are others that focus on providing added comfort for one specific area of the body.
