Tips for Grocery Shopping in a Wheelchair

Wheelchairs allow for mobility that the user would not otherwise have, but being in a wheelchair still limit’s one’s mobility from doing things they would be able to do if they were not in a wheelchair. It might be difficult to do a lot of day to day tasks in a wheelchair, from getting ready in the morning to shopping for your groceries. Today, we’re going to give you some tips for grocery shopping in a wheelchair, so hopefully your next trip to the store is completed with ease.

The Basics

There are a few things that are similar between shopping in a wheelchair and not in a wheelchair. For instance, you still need a shopping list and a meal plan for at least a week. This will help you get in and out of the store with food to keep you full for a week, and keep you from buying anything unnecessary. This also limits the amount of times you actually need to go to the store if you buy enough for longer amounts of time. You should also find an accessible store and make set times to be in and out of the store by. Setting times will make your trip more efficient because you won’t get distracted by all the things you could buy. It’s important to stick to what you need to get so you aren’t in the store any longer than you have to be.

What, or Who, to Bring

You can always bring someone with you to help you shop for your groceries. A companion is not only someone who could help you get in and out of the grocery store quicker, but also someone to keep you company while shopping. If you can’t bring someone with you, get a grabber or a reacher. This tool can help you grab things that are out of your reach so you can get everything you wanted without having to ask a stranger for help. If a store has no accessible carts, bring a basket or a box so you can easily go in to an aisle and get what you need, and then put your things in to your cart. Pushing a cart is hard in a wheelchair if it isn’t accessible, and keeping it as the end of the aisle while you gather things in your basket makes things easier on you.

There’s Always The Internet

To avoid the trouble of going to the grocery store, you can always order online. The internet has been a blessing when it comes to buying food with ease, and there are so many different grocers and online services that will deliver your food to you. You could order your food from Walmart, Amazon, ePantry, Google Shopping Express, and so much more.
