Power Scooter vs. Power Wheelchair

No one wants to lose their mobility, but modern advances in mobility technology have made getting around much easier for those who struggle to do so. There are several quality power scooter and power wheelchair brands out on the market today, but a lot of people have trouble telling the difference between the two pieces of equipment.

What is a Power Wheelchair?

Power wheelchairs are controlled by a battery and an electric motor. They’re particularly helpful for those who have issues using their hands or have limited mobility. They’re designed to travel over long distances and can turn in tight spaces. Some power wheelchairs are designed to be folded up or broken down, meaning you can store them or transport them easily.

What’s a Mobility Scooter?

Scooters come in three and four-wheel models and typically come with a turning seat, handlebars, and a rechargeable battery. If you’re planning on using a portable scooter, you’ll need to be able to maintain your balance and will need the use of both hands. Scooters are bigger than power wheelchairs and can’t be folded in the same way, however they still break apart to easily transport them.

Which is Right for Me?

There’s no right way to answer this question, as the answer depends on your personal needs. But generally, power wheelchairs are better for those with extreme limited mobility, while scooters are better for those with only some limitations. Wheelchairs are generally better for trips too just as long as you have the upper arm strength or assistance to help push you.
