I can't thank Kelly and her staff enough for how helpful and caring they have been during my mother's recovery. It is obvious that they have the client's best interests in mind. I highly recommend this company!

When you’re living with a disability, particularly one that causes issues with your mobility, it can feel impossible to leave the house. However, going out and socializing can be incredibly beneficial for disabled patients. Today we’re going to highlight some of the benefits of getting out there and having a good time! Let’s take a look.

Getting Out and About is Good for You

Leaving the house and going different places has a lot of benefits—whether you’re living with a disability or not. An activity as simple as going to the store can provide socialization and help combat the symptoms of depression. Cultivating and maintaining meaningful relationships with the people around you is one of the most important ways to keep your mind active as you age. Not only can socializing help with keeping the mind sharp, it can also help with memory. This, of course, is true for everyone, whether they’re living with a disability or not. Socialization has also proven effective in combating the onset of dementia and Alzheimer’s in older adults as well. Depression is a common problem for people living with disabilities, and leaving the house can help a lot. Simply feeling the sun on your skin can lift your mood and give your body Vitamin D—which helps your body absorb calcium and promote bone growth.

Some Small Steps To Getting Out and Feeling Good

If you or a loved one struggles with leaving the house, you may want to start small. Here are a few ideas and goals you can set to start the process of getting out and feeling good:

  • Spending some time in the yard.
  • Taking a short trip to the end of the block.
  • Going to a local park and observing nature.
  • Grabbing a bite to eat nearby.
  • Visiting a family member at their home.
  • Attending or participating in a community event.
