I can't thank Kelly and her staff enough for how helpful and caring they have been during my mother's recovery. It is obvious that they have the client's best interests in mind. I highly recommend this company!

Powered wheelchairs have grown in popularity over the years. They’re convenient, easy to use, and can last for years. While these mobile devices have plenty of benefits, they also come with some potential risks. For the most part, power wheelchairs are safe. Here are some things you can do to make using one even safer.

Read the Owner’s Manual

It’s common for people to disregard the owner’s manual unless something goes wrong with their powered wheelchair. The problem is that these booklets often get thrown away or can’t be found after using your wheelchair for some time. Be sure to review the owner’s manual before using your wheelchair to ensure that you’re familiar with how your wheelchair works and know how to operate it properly.

Always Use the Seat Belt

It’s generally recommended that you never use your powered wheelchair without first fastening your seatbelt. While your wheelchair may not go as fast as a car, the most powerful wheelchairs can go up to 8 mph. At any s[eed, there’s a risk of hitting something with your wheelchair and falling off. To avoid this, always fasten your seatbelt when using your chair.

Perform Preventative Maintenance

To ensure that your wheelchair is in tip-top shape and is safe to operate, be sure you’re taking care of it. You can do this by performing daily maintenance and weekly safety inspections. Clean your wheelchair, check its parts for signs of corrosion, and keep the wheelchair dry. If you do see a problem, have it fixed immediately before it turns into a bigger problem.

Travel Outdoors Cautiously

The outdoors are filled with obstacles that can make using a powered wheelchair unsafe. For example, tree roots and curbs make it hard for wheelchairs to maneuver sidewalks. Only use your powered wheelchair on smooth, flat surfaces. However, avoid using it in the middle of the streets as this is extremely dangerous.
